Turtles, Chickens, and Japan’s Only Original Edo Castle πŸ―πŸ’πŸ“

When you think of Japanese castles, Kyoto or Osaka might come to mind—but hidden on the island of Shikoku is one of the country’s most unique gems: Kochi Castle. On Day 5 of our Celebrity Cruise through Japan, we made a stop in Kochi and discovered that this castle isn’t just beautiful—it’s full of surprises, from turtles to chickens!

Why Kochi Castle is So Special ✨
Here’s a fun fact for history buffs: Kochi Castle is the only castle in Japan that still has all of its original Edo period buildings. That includes the iconic castle tower and the Honmaru Palace, both dating back to the 1600s.

Most Japanese castles were either destroyed in wars, earthquakes, or fires, and later rebuilt. Kochi Castle, however, survived the centuries—making it a must-visit for anyone interested in Japanese history and architecture.

Visiting Kochi Castle 🏯

Entry is just 500 yen (around $3.37 USD), which is a steal considering the cultural value you’re stepping into. Unfortunately, we didn’t have enough time to go inside during our visit, but even exploring the surrounding areas was worth it.

The castle sits atop Otakayama Hill, right in the center of Kochi City, which means you also get great views of the city and the Kochi Plain—the historic heart of Tosa Province.

The Peaceful Turtle Spot 🐒

Before leaving the castle grounds, don’t forget to look down at the bridge. Beneath it, you’ll find turtles and fish swimming lazily in the water. It’s a peaceful, almost meditative moment that makes for a nice contrast to the castle’s grandeur.ο»Ώ

Chickens at Yosakoi Inari Shrine πŸ“

Just steps away from the castle is something you won’t find anywhere else in Japan: the Yosakoi Inari Shrine, where chickens roam freely!

Why chickens, you ask? It may be connected to the region’s history of raising Onagadori long-tailed chickens, a rare and culturally important breed that originated in Kochi centuries ago. Whether or not that’s the true reason, it makes the shrine one of the quirkiest and most memorable stops in the city.

Final Thoughts 🌸

Kochi Castle is more than just a piece of history—it’s an experience that blends culture, nature, and unexpected fun. Between the original Edo period architecture, the tranquil turtle-filled waters, and the chickens strutting their stuff at Yosakoi Inari Shrine, this stop was a highlight of our Japan cruise.

If you’re planning a trip through Shikoku, make sure Kochi Castle is on your list—you’ll get history, charm, and a few laughs all in one visit.

Did you know there’s a place in South Dakota where you can literally take home a piece of history? πŸ‘€ Yep—welcome back to Part 3 of our Crazy Horse Memorial adventure, where we dive into one of the most meaningful and fascinating areas of the entire complex: the Native American Educational and Cultural Center. πŸ‘€ “Would you believe me if I told you this mountain has had over ELEVEN MILLION tons of rock blasted away… and it’s still not finished? Let me show you why this $5 tour is one of the best travel deals in America.” Welcome to Part 2 of our Crazy Horse Memorial adventure — and today we’re hopping on the guided bus tour that takes you right up to the mountain itself. For just five dollars per person, this ride gets you shockingly close to the carving-in-progress — and trust me… hearing the story while standing beneath it hits completely different. Our guide, Allen, shared how this all began back in 1947, when sculptor Korczak Ziolkowski arrived in the Black Hills from Connecticut… to a place with no roads, no water, no electricity. He literally lived in a tent for seven months before clearing trees and building a log studio by hand. By the late 1950s, with ten kids to raise, the family even opened a dairy farm right on site — and today they still raise cattle here. Oh — and the very first admission to Crazy Horse in 1950? πŸ‘‰ Just 50 cents per carload.
