Exploring Hiroshima Peace Memorial Park

On Day 6 of our Celebrity Cruise through Japan, we arrived in Hiroshima—a city that has become a global symbol of peace and resilience. Visiting Hiroshima Peace Memorial Park was one of the most moving experiences of the entire trip.

The park itself is more than just a green space. It’s a living memorial—filled with monuments, memorials, and symbols—that quietly remind every visitor of Hiroshima’s hope for a world without war. Best of all? Entry to Hiroshima Peace Memorial Park and the Hiroshima National Peace Memorial Hall for the Atomic Bomb Victims is completely free, making it accessible for everyone to learn, reflect, and remember.

Key Memorials Inside Hiroshima Peace Memorial Park

✨ Hiroshima Victims Memorial Cenotaph

This simple but powerful monument was designed in 1952. Inside are the names of every known victim of the 1945 atomic bomb. The cenotaph frames the Atomic Bomb Dome perfectly in the background—symbolically protecting the souls of the victims.

✨ Prayer for Peace Memorial Statue

Standing tall in the park, this statue serves as a constant reminder of Hiroshima’s wish for lasting peace.

✨ National Flag Stand & Atomic Bomb Memorial Burial Mound

The burial mound contains the ashes of tens of thousands of victims who lost their lives that day, many of whom could not be identified. It’s a sobering reminder of the scale of the tragedy.

✨ The Bell of Peace

One of the most moving moments for me was ringing the Hiroshima Peace Bell. Anyone can walk up, pull the rope, and strike the bell. The resonating sound is meant to symbolize a world without nuclear weapons. It’s a free, non-religious activity that makes you feel directly connected to Hiroshima’s message of peace.

✨ Atomic Bomb Dome (Genbaku Dome)

Just across the river stands the haunting Atomic Bomb Dome, also known as the Hiroshima Peace Memorial. Once the Prefectural Industrial Promotion Hall, it was preserved exactly as it looked on August 6, 1945. Today, it’s a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the most recognizable landmarks of Hiroshima.

✨ Children’s Peace Monument

This touching monument was built to honor Sadako Sasaki and the thousands of child victims of the atomic bombing. Sadako became famous for folding over 1,000 paper cranes while battling leukemia, a symbol of peace and healing. Even today, the monument is surrounded by paper cranes sent from children all over the world.

✨ Flame of Peace

This striking sculpture depicts two hands gently cupping a flame. It will remain lit until the last nuclear weapon on earth is destroyed.

Why You Should Visit Hiroshima Peace Memorial Park

Visiting this park isn’t just about sightseeing—it’s about experiencing history in a deeply personal way. Every memorial, every sculpture, every symbol here is designed to encourage reflection and hope.

For cruise passengers like us, it’s also an easy and meaningful day trip from the port. The park is centrally located, walkable, and filled with opportunities to learn more about Hiroshima’s past and its mission for peace.

Final Thoughts

Hiroshima is a city of remembrance, resilience, and peace. Walking through the park, ringing the Peace Bell, and standing before the Atomic Bomb Dome were experiences I’ll never forget.

If you’re traveling through Japan—especially by Celebrity Cruise—make sure Hiroshima Peace Memorial Park is on your itinerary. It’s free, it’s powerful, and it’s one of the most important places you can visit in Japan.

Did you know there’s a place in South Dakota where you can literally take home a piece of history? 👀 Yep—welcome back to Part 3 of our Crazy Horse Memorial adventure, where we dive into one of the most meaningful and fascinating areas of the entire complex: the Native American Educational and Cultural Center. Located in the heart of the Black Hills of South Dakota, Crazy Horse Memorial is already one of the most awe-inspiring monuments in the United States—but stepping into this center takes the experience to a whole new level.

👀 “Would you believe me if I told you this mountain has had over ELEVEN MILLION tons of rock blasted away… and it’s still not finished? Let me show you why this $5 tour is one of the best travel deals in America.” Welcome to Part 2 of our Crazy Horse Memorial adventure — and today we’re hopping on the guided bus tour that takes you right up to the mountain itself. For just five dollars per person, this ride gets you shockingly close to the carving-in-progress — and trust me… hearing the story while standing beneath it hits completely different. Our guide, Allen, shared how this all began back in 1947, when sculptor Korczak Ziolkowski arrived in the Black Hills from Connecticut… to a place with no roads, no water, no electricity. He literally lived in a tent for seven months before clearing trees and building a log studio by hand. By the late 1950s, with ten kids to raise, the family even opened a dairy farm right on site — and today they still raise cattle here. Oh — and the very first admission to Crazy Horse in 1950? 👉 Just 50 cents per carload.
