The Korean Grandma Who Adopted My Husband

After days at sea aboard our Celebrity Cruise, we finally docked in Busan, South Korea — and let me tell you, this day ended with one of the most memorable meals of our entire trip.

Picture this: hours of exploring Busan’s buzzing streets, the neon lights, the energy, the smells of sizzling street food... and then the quest for authentic Korean BBQ began.

No tourist traps. No trendy Instagram cafes. Just good, old-school Korean BBQ in Busan — the kind locals love and travelers dream of finding.

πŸ₯© The Search for Real Korean Flavor
After what felt like miles of walking, we stumbled upon a tiny, tucked-away restaurant. No English menu. No fancy sign. Just an older woman waving us inside with a smile that said, “You’re home now.”

That’s when we knew — we’d found the real deal.

Inside, the warmth hit us instantly — both from the grill and from her motherly energy. Before we could even sit down properly, the side dishes (banchan) started arriving.

If you’ve never experienced banchan, let me explain: these are small dishes served with every Korean meal — kimchi, marinated vegetables, pickled radish, seaweed salad, and more. But they’re not just side snacks; they’re part of the entire Korean BBQ ritual. Every bite builds on the last, creating an explosion of flavor with every combo you try.

🍺 Beer + BBQ = Pure Bliss

By the time our ice-cold Korean beer hit the table, it felt like heaven. After miles of walking and mouthwatering anticipation, that first sip? Absolute perfection.

Then came the sizzling meat — juicy, smoky, and perfectly grilled right in front of us. The sauces were next level. We’ve had Korean BBQ back home, but this? This was family-style, grandma-approved, full-service magic.

πŸ‘΅ Meet “Korean Grandma”

Halfway through dinner, something hilarious happened. The sweet lady who owned the place started hovering around our table, making sure we were eating enough (as all good grandmas do).

Then, out of nowhere — she started feeding my husband. Literally, chopsticks to his mouth! We couldn’t stop laughing.

She didn’t fuss over me or the ladies, just him. By the end of the night, we were joking that he’d been adopted — his very own Korean grandma in Busan.

❀️ A Heartwarming, Unforgettable Meal

It wasn’t just the food that made this meal special — it was the feeling. The laughter, the warmth, the never-ending plates of food, and the pure hospitality that makes Korean culture so special.

We came looking for dinner… and found a grandma who wouldn’t take no for an answer.

Busan, you’ve officially won us over.

If you’re ever visiting South Korea and looking for authentic Korean BBQ, skip the touristy spots. Wander the side streets, look for a smiling grandma waving you in — and prepare for the best meal of your life.

πŸ₯’ Fun Fact: Why Koreans Serve So Many Side Dishes

In Korean culture, meals are about balance and harmony — sweet, salty, spicy, sour, and umami flavors all working together. “Banchan” are served to complement the main dish and encourage sharing, conversation, and connection. It’s not just about eating — it’s about community.

So next time you’re at Korean BBQ, remember: the little dishes matter just as much as the main course!ο»Ώ

Did you know there’s a place in South Dakota where you can literally take home a piece of history? πŸ‘€ Yep—welcome back to Part 3 of our Crazy Horse Memorial adventure, where we dive into one of the most meaningful and fascinating areas of the entire complex: the Native American Educational and Cultural Center. Located in the heart of the Black Hills of South Dakota, Crazy Horse Memorial is already one of the most awe-inspiring monuments in the United States—but stepping into this center takes the experience to a whole new level.

πŸ‘€ “Would you believe me if I told you this mountain has had over ELEVEN MILLION tons of rock blasted away… and it’s still not finished? Let me show you why this $5 tour is one of the best travel deals in America.” Welcome to Part 2 of our Crazy Horse Memorial adventure — and today we’re hopping on the guided bus tour that takes you right up to the mountain itself. For just five dollars per person, this ride gets you shockingly close to the carving-in-progress — and trust me… hearing the story while standing beneath it hits completely different. Our guide, Allen, shared how this all began back in 1947, when sculptor Korczak Ziolkowski arrived in the Black Hills from Connecticut… to a place with no roads, no water, no electricity. He literally lived in a tent for seven months before clearing trees and building a log studio by hand. By the late 1950s, with ten kids to raise, the family even opened a dairy farm right on site — and today they still raise cattle here. Oh — and the very first admission to Crazy Horse in 1950? πŸ‘‰ Just 50 cents per carload.
